Rockcote Finecote

Rockcote Finecote is a ready-for-use, pre-coloured acrylic coating ideal for covering and decorating suitably prepared interior or exterior surfaces. Finecote may be applied over the following correctly prepared substrates:

  • A.A.C.
  • Brickwork (Calsil and Clay)
  • Cement Render
  • Concrete (Off Form, Tilt up, Pre-Cast)
  • Concrete Blockwork
  • Plaster Board
  • Polymer Render
  • Previously Painted walls

Rockcote Finecote is a ready-for-use acrylic based scrub fine look texture coating, providing a fine sand finish over cement or polymer renders. Rockcote Finecote effectively combines the aesthetically pleasing colours and styles of traditional render finishes with the performance properties of modern 100% acrylic coating systems. Depending on application techniques and tools used, Rockcote Finecote can also be worked to a number of traditional yet highly fashionable finishes such as “bagged” finishes or Mediterranean style finishes.

PERFORMANCE & PROPERTIES
Adhesion

Rockcote Finecote exhibits excellent adhesion to all common building materials if correct surface preparation is carried out in accordance with Rockcote specifications.

Durability

Rockcote Finecote is impact resistant, scuff/abrasion resistant. When used over Rockcote cement render coatings or Rockcote polymer coatings, Finecote can resist extremes of weather and attack from fungi and mould if over coated with Rockcote Clearcote or Armour. When used over Rockcote cement render coatings or Rockcote polymer textures, Rockcote Finecote provides a finish that is resistant to micro-cracking caused by normal thermal expansion and contraction of the substrate. Finecote also remains vapour permeable, allowing the release of water vapour from the coating system and substrate. See Rockcote Specification “Performance Characteristics of Rockcote Render Systems [RR Systems]” for information on categories of finish.

Colours Available

Rockcote Finecote can be tinted to a wide range of colours from soft natural tones to vibrant colours. Light-fastness of chosen exterior colours must be confirmed before ordering. Suitability of Dark colours for use over light-weight substrates must be confirmed with a Rockcote Sales Representative before ordering. If used as a top coat as part of the Rockcote RRR system, the colour Light Reflectance Value (LRV) must be greater than 25%.

Rockcote Finecote is supplied to the building site premixed. Colouring can be incorporated at the factory or added on site.

Surface Preparation

All surfaces should be clean and free from loose material such as drummy sections and flaking paint. Powdery surfaces should not be coated with Rockcote Finecote. Fill cracks and other surface imperfections with suitable Rockcote patching compounds. Glossy surfaces should be lightly sanded and washed clean. Dirty surfaces should be washed down with warm water mixed with biodegradable detergent and flushed with clean water. Mould should be removed by cleaning with a 10% bleach solution and then flushing with clean water. Surfaces should then be treated with a proprietary surface sanitiser with residual action. Only dry surfaces with a moisture content of less than 15% Wood-Moisture-Equivalent (%WME) should be coated.

Rockcote pre-bagged Cement based renders can be coated 48 hours after drying. Other new cementitious surfaces should not be coated until 30 days old.

APPLICATION
Concrete Block and Brick Walls

(Where mortar joints and other imperfections need to be concealed)

Rockcote Skimcote V6 or Quick Render should be applied according to specifications and left as a float finish. A coat of Rockcote Texprime is then applied prior to the application of Rockcote Finecote. Apply one coat of Rockcote Finecote by stainless steel trowel to a wet film thickness of 1- 1.5mm and trowel flat. To achieve optimum results apply Finecote in two tight coats. As Finecote dries the surface is floated with a plastic float and finished with a soft sponge to achieve an even sand finish.

Limitations
  • Used alone, Finecote is a decorative finish only. The performance of Finecote may be improved while maintaining the natural look of the finish by over coating with Rockcote Clearcote. Where a higher performance coating is required, Finecote must be over coated with one or more coats of Rockcote Armour. Refer to Rockcote Render (RR) system Performance Codes to select a suitable star rating for your selected system.
  • Application should not be carried out in temperatures below 5 ° C or above 35 ° C or in strong winds. Wall and air temperatures must not fall below 5 ° C during the drying process.
  • Rockcote Finecote is unsuitable total water immersion or for wall areas subjected to possible continual damp and/or hydrostatic pressure from within the substrate.
  • Rockcote Finecote is unsuitable for use over floors or roof areas.
  • Rockcote Finecote is unsuitable for use directly to exterior timber or metal work.
  • The application of Rockcote Finecote is a specialist procedure and should only be carried out by a skilled and experienced applicator and in accordance with Rockcote Technical Specifications.
STORAGE, SAFETY & HANDLING
Refer to the Rockcote MSDS for Finecote
  • Pails should be kept upright at all times and not be stacked more than three high during transportation.
  • Pails should be stored out of direct sunlight and at temperatures below 40 ° C and above 4 ° C.
  • When working with Rockcote Finecote, observe the usual precautions for handling water-borne acrylic based products as listed below.
  • Avoid inhalation of vapour, prolonged skin contact and particularly eye contact.
  • If skin or eye contact occurs, flush thoroughly with clean water and see a doctor if irritation occurs.
  • If ingestion occurs, drink at least two glasses of water and consult a doctor.
  • Wear protective clothing to minimise skin contact, and wear goggles where spatter is likely
