Primers

The range of Rockcote Primers consists of high performance, water bourne, acrylic primers for masonry surfaces, based on a pure acrylic polymer.

Rockcote acrylic Primers seal and prime all clean masonry surfaces, providing excellent adhesion, controlled suction and an alkali resistant barrier, which will extend the life of and improve the performance of subsequent applications of acrylic based paints and textured finishes.

Adhesion

Rockcote Primers reduce suction on porous and high suction substrates such as A.A.C. and Cement Sheeting. They improve both the workability and adhesion of subsequent applications of acrylic paints or texture coatings.

Alkali Resistant

Masonry substrates can be highly alkaline, which can be very damaging to standard acrylic coatings. The excellent alkali resistance of Rockcote Primers is very important to the long-term performance of water-based acrylic systems over masonry substrates.

Anti Efflorescence Primer is a barrier coat against efflorescence with excellent adhesion and a controlled slip finish for easy application of subsequent trowel applied coatings. A/E Primer adheres well to most clean surfaces. AE Primer should be used for priming of all site-mixed renders and mortar-jointed brick/block walls. Allow 28 days for site-mixed renders to cure before applying AE primer
(See Rockcote Technical Specification on Efflorescence and its removal).

Hi Opacity Primer is a general purpose economical masonry primer with good opacity. It is especially suited where roller-applied textured top-coats are intended, to prevent any variations in contrast from the substrate showing through the top-coat. To aid in this effect, it can be tinted. Hi Opacity primer has low roller spatter application properties for hassle free use.

Masonry Primer is an economical low viscosity primer that provides excellent holdout for subsequent coats of Rockcote textures or paints.

Texprime is specially formulated to allow colours to be reproduced with economical tint additions. Its limited slip properties make it suitable for use on F.C. sheeting, tilt-up and other smooth surfaces. Tilt up panels must be primed with Solprime before the application of Texprime.

EcoStyle Sealer/Undercoat is an ultra low V.O.C., low odour, high opacity water borne sealer and primer suitable for interior or exterior use. EcoStyle Sealer/Undercoat is a people safe, environmentally friendly product. Refer to separate Technical Specification Sheet.

Limitations
  • Rockcote Primers should only be used over sound clean substrates, and are not suitable for areas that will be submerged in water or subjected to continual moisture.
  • Rockcote Water-borne Primers are only suitable for use on clean surfaces free from oil, dirt, release agents and loose unbound and/or powdery material.
  • Rockcote Primers must only be used on substrates with a moisture level of less than 15% WME.
  • Rockcote Primers are not suitable for use direct to substrate below damp proof installments.
APPLICATION
Surface Preparation

Surfaces should be clean, dry and free from loose or crumbling material, oil or form release agents.

Care should be taken to keep Rockcote Primers off windows and adjacent surfaces that are not to be treated, as they can be very difficult to remove once allowed to dry.

The application of Rockcote Anti Efflorescence Primer, Hi Opacity Primer, and Texprime is a specialist procedure, and should be carried out by a skilled and experienced applicator.

Dilution Rates

  • Rockcote Primers may be thinned with clean water, depending on the substrate.
  • Concrete, Bricks or Blocks or cement render – add up to 10% water if surface is unduly porous.
STORAGE, SAFETY and HANDLING

Refer to Rockcote MSDS for individual Primers

  • Pails should not be stacked more than three high during transportation and should be stored out of direct sunlight and above 4 ° C.
  • When working with Rockcote Primers, observe the usual precautions for handling water based acrylic products.
  • Avoid inhalation of the powder or vapour, prolonged skin contact and particularly eye contact.
  • If contact occurs, flush thoroughly with clean water.
  • In the case of the Primers, if ingestion occurs, drink at least two glasses of water and consult a doctor as soon as possible.
  • Wear protective clothing to minimise skin contact, and wear goggles where spatter is likely.
  • Where spills occur, soak up liquid spillage with sand/sawdust and dispose of in a sensible manner.
  • Clean up equipment and area with water. Do not permit run-off to sewer, storm water or open bodies of water.
