Roman Cement

Rockcote Roman Cement is a scientifically formulated decorative render combining traditional materials with modern technology, to provide an aesthetically pleasing coloured render finish with improved performance properties. Applied to a thickness of between 3 - 6mm Rockcote Roman Cement can successfully emulate traditional limewash & coloured render finishes in colour, texture & style.

Composition

Rockcote Roman Cement is manufactured from finely graded quartz sand with a polymer-modified white or off white cement binder. Small additions of plasticiser & wetting agent improve the mixing & application properties as well as the final finishing characteristics.

Supplied in 20 kg paper sacks. Rockcote Roman Cement is a pre-blended powder product to which clean water is added on site. The mixed material has a pot life of 3 - 4 hours & should not be retempered.

PERFORMANCE & PROPERTIES

Designed to be used as a decorative finish only over masonry surfaces, Rockcote Roman Cement provides a soft patterned finish that will age differently according to the degree of exposure & climatic conditions.

Adhesion

Rockcote Roman Cement exhibits excellent adhesion to normal masonry substrates. Smooth or porous surfaces should be primed with Rockcote Acrybond or a “key” coat applied prior to the application of Roman Cement.

Water Resistance

Rockcote Roman Cement contains an effective hydrophobing agent to provide a water repellent coating that will remain vapour permeable, allowing the walls to “breathe”.

Natural Colours

Rockcote Roman Cement may be tinted to a wide range of colours using specially selected coloured oxides providing a soft natural finish. *

Consistent Quality

Rockcote Roman Cement is manufactured to exact specifications in the factory & delivered to the building site in membrane lined multi-walled paper sacks where the product is mixed only with clean water prior to application.

Surface Preparation

All surfaces to be coated should be clean, dry & free from oil, grease, laitance or loose material. Smooth or porous surfaces should be primed with Rockcote Acrybond and/or a “key” coat applied.

As Rockcote Roman Cement is designed to be applied in a thin section [3 - 6mm], masonry walls are usually rendered to a wood float finish with Rockcote Skimcote or Quick Render prior to the application of Rockcote Roman Cement.

Mixing

Rockcote Roman Cement should be mixed in a clean container using a mechanical stirrer. Clean water is first run into the mixing container [approx. 4 litres for a 20 kg bag] followed by the Roman Cement powder under agitation. It is preferable to mix the material to a stiff paste & then add water to achieve a suitable working consistency. The mixture is allowed to stand for approx. 10 minutes, after which the consistency is adjusted with clean water & the material is ready for application.

Coverage

Approx. 3 - 6 square metres per 20 kg bag. Coverage rates may vary according to the condition of the substrate, application technique or desired finish.

APPLICATION

Rockcote Roman Cement is applied to the properly prepared surface using a stainless steel trowel. As the wall dries the surface is worked to the desired finish with a trowel, wood float or soft sponge. Care must be taken when applying coloured renders to ensure the materials for a given area are mixed & applied in the same manner to ensure colour consistency. The finished work must be protected against damage as patching & cleaning is very difficult.

Rockcote Roman Cement is a mineral based product & should be applied by a competent trades-person familiar with the use of such materials. Correct solid plastering procedures such as the provision of expansion joints & curing of finished work must be observed.

T he application of Rockcote Roman Cement is a specialist procedure & should only be carried out by a skilled and experienced applicator and in accordance with our technical specifications.

Packaging

Rockcote Roman Cement comes packaged in a 20 kg paper sack.

* It is important to note that Rockcote Roman Cement is a mineral based product containing natural sand fillers & the colour may vary due to changes in the sand used, application techniques & weathering of the product. Rockcote Roman Cement should only be used where these features are desirable. If a low maintenance finish with even colour is required, Rockcote Armour must be applied (refer to the technical specifications on Armour), or an acrylic based Rockcote product selected.
