Rockcote Scrubfine

Rockcote Scrubfine is a polymer modified thin section cement render that is designed as a finish coat over conventional cement render coatings. Scrubfine is also ideal for rendering and/or patching masonry surfaces, providing an even finish for the subsequent application of conventional paints or textured coatings. Rockcote Scrubfine is suitable for all masonry substrates including difficult surfaces such as A.A.C. or off-form concrete.

Scrubfine exhibits high strength and excellent adhesion to difficult substrates even when applied in thin sections (3 - 6mm).

Scrubfine provides a water repellent coating and is manufactured without the addition of hydrated lime, making it more compatible with acrylic based paints and applied finishes. Supplied to the building site in convenient 20 kg paper sacks, Scrubfine is a pre-mixed powder product to which only clean water is added on site prior to application.

Limitations

Rockcote Scrubfine should not be used over cement sheeting or painted surfaces.

Although Rockcote Scrubfine exhibits greatly improved performance characteristics and reliability over conventional cement renders, it is essentially a mineral based decorative render and good trade practices should be adhered to at all times.

For example, provision of expansion joints where indicated by the substrate or at the junction of different substrates, and ensuring finished work is correctly cured by regular re-wetting with water for several days after application in hot or dry conditions.

Time and Cost Savings

Scrubfine is quicker to apply than standard sand and cement render. Rockcote Scrubfine requires less clean up and greatly reduced curing time before the application of finish coats. Under normal conditions, the application of Rockcote acrylic paint or texture coatings may be commenced two days after Scrubfine has dried if the Scrubfine is fully cured and moisture content of the Scrubfine is less than 15% WME. Rockcote Scrubfine is suitable for machine application, which can further increase the speed of application.

APPLICATION
Thin Section Rendering (3 - 6mm)

Rockcote Scrubfine may be used as a cement render over all common building substrates.

Large hollows and deviations in the surface are first filled and screeded with Scrubfine prior to application of the final coat. Rockcote Scrubfine is applied by steel trowel to a thickness of approximately 3 - 6mm, with 3mm being the minimum for one application.

As the material dries it is floated with a wood or polystyrene float. This surface is suitable for a textured coating. A surface ready to accept paint is achieved by using a soft sponge over the floated area.

Patching Blocks and Bricks

Rockcote Scrubfine is applied by trowel or spatula, to patch imperfections and joints between blocks and bricks.

Off-form Concrete and Tilt-slab Walls

For patching "blow holes", form joints and minor imperfections, Rockcote Scrubfine is applied by trowel or spatula and may be sponged into the "blow holes". For filling large imperfections such as lifting bolts or breakages, Rockcote Scrubfine is applied "proud" of the surface. As the material sets it is screeded off and floated to a smooth finish.

The application of Rockcote Scrubfine is a specialist procedure and should only be carried out by a skilled and experienced applicator and in accordance with our technical specifications.

SURFACE PREPARATION
  • Surfaces must be clean and free of oil, grease, dirt, mould and other contaminants.
  • Over normal masonry substrates no further preparation is required.
  • Over highly porous surfaces (A.A.C. Hebel), seal with 1 coat Rockcote Acrybond mixed 50/50 with water to control suction and improve adhesion.
  • Over highly porous and extremely smooth substrates (some precast or off-form concrete), apply one coat of Acrybond 50/50 with water and allow to dry before applying a further coat of Acrybond. Rockcote Scrubfine should be applied over the 2nd application of Acrybond while it is still wet.
  • Over dense, smooth surfaces (off-form concrete), apply a coat of Rockcote Acrybond mixed 50/50 with water and apply Scrubfine before the Acrybond dries.
  • For masonry surfaces or cement render surfaces, thoroughly wet down surfaces before the application of Scrubfine and apply the Scrubfine once the wet look has diminished and the surface has absorbed all free water.

Pack Size

20 kg bags. Pallet lots are 56x20kg bags ( 1120kg)

Flammability

Non Flammable

Activation mix

For traditional Hawk and Trowel hand application, mix approximately 20 kg of Scrubfine to 3.5L of clean water for a minimum of 3 minutes. Allow mixture to activate for 5 minutes and adjust consistency by adding a little more water if required.

Wet Film Thickness Per coat

Optimum results are normally achieved by applying approximately 3 to 6 mm thick per coat. Scrubfine should not be applied in a single coat greater that 12mmthick.

Figures are a guide only. Coverage rates vary according to application technique and substrate factors. If the total thickness of the material is to exceed 30mm the coating must be reinforced and mechanically fixed to the substrate.

Drying (55%RelativeHumidity,
25 oC)

Scrubfine dries in approximately 8 hours under normal drying conditions.
(Dry times vary with changes in ambient temperature and humidity and residual moisture in the substrate ).

Curing

Rewet 2 to 3 times a day with clean water for 2 days. This is especially important during hot weather.

Finishing

Finished appearance is light grey in colour. Finished colour can vary due to curing conditions and finishing technique.

Clean Up

Clean with water immediately after use. Recently dried render may be more easily removed with warm water mixed with detergent.

Maintenance

Any identified damaged should be repaired as soon as possible. Refer to Rockcote specification on General Maintenance.

Durability

Excellent interior or exterior. Not for use over active chimney flues. Not for use over dimensionally unstable substrates.

OVERCOATING

Rockcote Scrubfine has been specifically formulated as a top coat render manufactured without the addition of hydrated lime and is readily over coated with acrylic paints and texture finishes. ^ Rockcote Scrubfine should not be left uncoated for an extended period of time and should be painted with an acrylic primer or Rockcote Armour as soon as practicable within 28 days after being fully cured.

Before application of texture finishes, the surface should be sealed with 1 coat of Rockcote Masonry Primer.

STORAGE, SAFETY and HANDLING

Refer to Rockcote’s MSDS for Scrubfine

  • Rockcote Scrubfine must be kept dry during transportation and storage.
  • When working with Scrubfine observe the usual precautions for handling cement and water acrylic based products.
  • Avoid inhalation of the powder or vapour, prolonged skin contact and particularly eye contact.
  • If contact occurs, flush thoroughly with clean water immediately.
  • In the case of Scrubfine, if ingestion occurs, drink at least 2 glasses of water and consult a doctor immediately.
  • Wear protective clothing to minimise skin contact and wear goggles where splatter is likely.
  • Where spills occur, sweep up dry material or soak up liquid spillage with sand/sawdust and remove to suitable disposal as soon as possible.
  • Clean up equipment and area with water. Do not permit run-off to sewer, storm water or open bodies of water.
