Primers

A critical element of any coating system is to ensure that surfaces and substrates are correctly prepared prior to overcoating with the next system component.

ROCKCOTE has a range of primers to suit just about every substrate – to seal, provide protection and enhance adhesion to both the substrate and the next layer.

All substrates must be installed as per manufacturer’s specifications prior to use of primer. Surfaces must be clean, dry and free from loose or crumbling material, oil or form release agents.

For some primers, additional preparation is required so always refer to the Technical Data Sheet for information prior to application.

Care should be taken to keep ROCKCOTE Primers off windows and adjacent surfaces that are not to be treated as they can be difficult to remove when dry.

Masonry Primer Hi Op: Designed to provide a low suction substrate that will increase the lifespan of subsequent paint coatings. The high opacity formulation provides a solid base colour in a full range of colours and shades. For tilt-up concrete panels, ROCKCOTE Solprime must be applied prior to application.

Anti Efflorescent (AE) Primer: a cement primer that provides an effective barrier coat against efflorescence. Must be used for the priming of all site-mixed renders prior to the application of other ROCKCOTE bagged or rolled products. Allow 28 days for site-mixed renders to cure before application.

Texprime: a highly adhesive primer for all substrates that require a sand-based primer with limited slip properties including fibre cement sheeting, tilt-up and other smooth surfaces. Tilt-up and pre-cast panels must be primed with ROCKCOTE Solprime before the application of Texprime.

Rust Inhibiting Primer: a fast-drying, white-pigmented acrylic latex primer. Designed to prime, seal and block out most stains on interior and exterior surfaces including oil-based, acrylic or latex finish paints. Can be used to block out water, grease, rust, smoke, redwood, creosote and asphalt stains.

MgOBoard Primer: a high performance acrylic based primer specifically designed for outstanding adhesion to magnesium (MgO) board. The deep base formulation ensures that MgO Board Primer can be tinted to darker colours as required.

Tile Roof Primer: an ideal primer for cement tile roofs prior to the application of ROCKCOTE Solar Protect. It reduces suction, improves coverage and provides great adhesion.

EcoStyle Sealer/Undercoat: an interior/exterior primer for plasterboard, fibre cement sheet and timber. Features excellent adhesion and superb coverage. Can be overcoated with ROCKCOTE EcoStyle Paints, ROCKCOTE Armour and some natural materials including ROCKCOTE Marrakesh and ROCKCOTE Venetian Plaster.

Solprime: a high-performance, solvent based acrylic primer for hard and dense substrates such as precast and tilt-up concrete. Designed to promote adhesion and eliminate excess substrate absorption. Solprime can help to eliminate residual release agent and the degradation of top coats through saponification.

Acrybond: an acrylic bonding agent designed to be added to ROCKCOTE Quick Render Grey and Quick Render Off White to increase adhesion and strength. Also suitable as a primer to reduce suction over highly absorbent substrates such as AAC.

Fast Bond: a liquid bonding agent designed for use in ROCKOTE's North Queensland Range, specifically Skimcote and Fast Float Finish.

Wet Edge Extender: Assists in slowing down the drying process of ROCKCOTE acrylic based paints and textures excluding EcoStyle Paints.

ROCKCOTE Anti Efflorescent Primer is essential over site mix

Sand and cement mixed on site can be inconsistent, with unpredictable levels of lime that can lead to efflorescence if left untreated. Efflorescence is the formation of salt deposits on or near the surface of concrete causing a change in appearance.

Efflorescence can put an entire walling or coating system at risk as a combination of salt and water compromises the integrity of the system and can ultimately lead to aesthetic and structural issues.

ROCKCOTE’s Anti Efflorescent Primer is a fully acrylic, flexible primer, designed to resist minor cracking which can lead to the release of efflorescence.

Thicker and heavier than most primers, ROCKCOTE Anti Efflorescent Primer creates a membrane-like protective layer between the unknown chemical elements in sand and cement, and the acrylic top coat.

In all situations where site mix is used with a ROCKCOTE textured finish (such as Sandcote or Toscani) or is being overcoated with ROCKCOTE Armour, the application of ROCKCOTE Anti Efflorescent Primer is essential.

Anti Efflorescent Primer is not required over ROCKCOTE’s Quickrenders which have been specially formulated without the presence of salt and to retard water migration, preventing efflorescence.
