Your Woodfired Pizza Oven Kit - What do you get?
Firstly, and most importantly a fantastic day with your family & friends building your oven. The materials you use to build your oven are soft and forgiving.
The techniques you use, are centuries old, from a time when communities were stronger, and people happier. Your kids will love getting their hands dirty mixing up clay, while mum & dad form newly mixed straw and clay into cobs. By lunch time the fruit of everyone's labour, starts to show.
To make this easy and achievable in one day your kit comes with:
Optimised Cob Mix:
Traditionally clay would be dug out of the ground, mixed with sands, grits, and cow manure. This isn't really an option for many people today, and requires a good knowledge of cob to ensure it is strong enough and cracks are reduced. (In places where they have cob mosques, there are cob caretakers whose job is to get this right) .
To make cob a viable modern material, we created our optimized cob mix, and use our world class dry blending plant dry, to blend and bag it. Making quality building cob cheaply and easily to anyone of any experience.
Traditionally, woodfired ovens made out of cob are just a dome, with an doorway cut out. This is not really ideal for cooking pizza, bread, roasts and other more European food. For this a more traditional shaped igloo shaped oven is more suited. The only problem is, the archway and door, is quite technical to form out of cob alone. It needs to be able to support itself whilst drying. Making a good seal around the door is almost impossible to achieve with cob alone.
To counter this we looked for another traditional and natural material that would be better suited. Our lab guys came back to us with firestone. A technique thought to be used by the Egyptians to build the trickier parts of the pyramids. We found we could make it out of post industrial waste. So our kits now come with Firestone arch which is sat in place, and then insulated with cob.
The door and arch work together to give you control over the temperature of the oven, while making it and burn much more efficiently. The geometry used in the ovens, means that air flows efficiently around the oven. Sliding the door in an out, lets you control how much air flows through the oven, and therefore its temperature. This makes cooking great wood fired pizza, roast vegges, specialty breads, chicken wings, ham, turkey and fish, so much easier than in a blazing out of control oven.
The Fire bricks
The firebricks are used only to create floor of your oven. Lying them flat in a bed of clay, ensures that you get those authentic crispy bases on all of your pizzas. The template and Instruction Manual:
The template makes getting the maths right for your oven easy. You want need to try to measure out any shapes, just line you template up and trace around it. The Booklet contain plenty of colour photos, diagrams and step by step instruction for building your wood fired oven. We also have our youtube clips which explain a few of the finer points.
The straw, shade cloth, sand & Trowel:
While commonly available, we don't mind wrapping these up in the kit, so you know you will have everything you need on the day. They are the sort of things we don't mind leaving out of your kit, and saving you some cash.
